The city is the capital of the Gumla district of the same name . Gumla is administered as a Nagar Panchayat . The city is divided into 20 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

The city's population is 51,264 according to the 2011 census. Gumla has a gender ratio of 953 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 89.3% in 2011. Almost 46% of the population are Hindus , approx. 20% are Muslims , approx. 18% are Christians and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 12.4% of the population.
