Gundacker von Judenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gundacker von Judenburg was the author or editor of the religious poetry " Christ's Hort ", which dates from the 13th century and is therefore part of courtly poetry. No other works by him are known.

Life

Little is known about the life of Gundacker von Judenburg. He came from Styria and named himself after the city Judenburg . Gundacker himself complained that he “escaped his master so early” (vs. 1314 ff.). This could indicate a dropped out of school education. His “unchunst” (non-art) also hindered him when writing his work. Art can probably be understood as "ars" - school education; but possibly this is just a topos of modesty.

The level of his theological, liturgical and Latin knowledge suggest that he came from the clergy. However, especially in the 13th century, such knowledge can also be found among many lay people ( lay piety ).
