The Bund Deutscher Zupfmusiker was founded in 1963 through the merger of the German Mandolinists and Guitarists Association (founded in 1919, mainly members from the bourgeoisie) and the German Workers Mandolinists Association (founded in 1923, mainly members from the working class). In 1968 the German Zupforchester (DZO) was founded by the BDZ on the initiative of Siegfried Behrends .
