The Gunnam flood protection system ( Korean 군남 홍수 조절 지) at the mouth of the Hantan River, about 12 km on the upper reaches of the Imjin River, is the first dam in South Korea to be built solely as a flood protection system . The concrete dam has a height of 26 meters and a length of 658 meters.
In the Imjin River area, local heavy downpours repeatedly occurred between 1996 and 1998 , causing a total of 116 deaths in the cities of Paju , Yangju , Dongducheon , Pocheon , Yeoncheon ( Gyeonggi-do Province ) and Cheorwongun ( Gangwon-do Province ). more than 30,000 people affected and caused billions in property damage. For this reason, the flood protection system was designed, construction began in November 2006 and completed in December 2013.
