Gunnar Berg (born May 21, 1863 in Svolvær , † December 23, 1893 in Berlin ) was a Norwegian painter, known for his Lofoten pictures.

He grew up in Svolvær, Lofoten , where his father Lars Todal Walnum Berg was a leading merchant. He was also to become a businessman and learned in his father's business, then from 1882 to 1883 in Bergen, where he was instructed by the still life painter and photographer Hans Jørgen Nicolaysen . On the advice of Adelsteen Normann , a family friend, he went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy to study painting with Eugen Dücker from 1883 to 1885 . Here he also met the Norwegian painters Ludvig Munthe and Georg Anton Rasmussen . While Normann and Otto Sinding emphasized the dramatic nature of the Lofoten Islands, Berg placed more emphasis on the depiction of daily life in the fishing villages. The fishing boats in the harbor form the foreground in many of the pictures. Unlike his older colleagues, who only painted Norway in summer, Berg showed it mostly snow-covered in winter.

After graduating, he returned to Svolvær and built a studio that has been preserved. Otto Sinding was a guest of the Berg family in the winter of 1885/86, and Gunnar was able to learn from the older man while painting outdoors together. He also used his own photographs as templates. He was now commuting between Germany and Lofoten.

From 1887, like Normann, he lived mostly in Berlin. Normann also took him to Paris. In 1893, Berg fell ill with cancer and had one of his legs amputated. Nevertheless, he traveled to Berlin, where he died in winter at the age of 30. He is buried in the family grave on Gunnarholmen in Svolvær. His bust was erected here in 1994.
