Gunnar silk thread

Gunnar Seidenfaden (born February 24, 1908 in Varde , Denmark ; † February 9, 2001 ) was a Danish diplomat and orchid researcher. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Seidenf. "

Life

Seidenfaden studied botany in Greenland and undertook numerous geological and botanical expeditions there. After graduating, he began a diplomatic career. In 1955 he became ambassador to Thailand and in 1959 to the Soviet Union . In his honor, a ship of the Danish Navy is named Gunnar Seidenfaden (see Supply class ).

Orchids

Silk thread is known for his research and descriptions of Southeast Asian orchids . He kept his collection of around 10,000 specimens in his private home in Borsholm. After his death, the collection was taken to the Copenhagen Botanical Garden . A collection of Seidenfadens botanical drawings is in the Museum of Natural History in Copenhagen.

Honors

The Orchideengattungen Seidenfadenia Garay , Gunnar Ella Senghas , Gunnarorchis Brieger , Seidenfadeniella C.S.Kumar and Seidenfia Szlach. were named after him.
