The supply class ships are multi-purpose ships of the Royal Danish Navy .

Ship description

The class consists of two ships built in 1981 on Ørskov Christensen Stålskibsværft in Frederikshavn . The designs came from Klaus Dwinger.

The ships were operated by the Danish Ministry of the Environment until the end of 2005 and were manned by members of the Danish Navy. Since January 1, 2006, the ships have been operated by the Danish Navy. On board the ships with 16 crew members there is space for a total of 34 people.

The ships have a range of around 3,500  nautical miles . You can stay at sea continuously for up to 25 days.

The superstructures are located in the forward area of ​​the ships. An open working deck is located behind the superstructure. The maximum deck load is 378 tons. There is a crane on the starboard side . This can lift up to 20 tons. The bollard pull of the ships is 25 tons.

In 2001 the Gunnar Seidenfaden was involved in the transfer of the Ro-Ro ship Lisco Gloria to a safe harbor.

Namesake

The Gunnar Seidenfaden is named after the Danish diplomat and botanist Gunnar Seidenfaden (1908–2001). Seidenfaden was the Danish ambassador to Thailand (1955–1959) and to the former Soviet Union (1959–1961). He was an expert on the orchids (Orchidaceae) in Southeast Asia and published a number of works on this genus. After his death, his collection of more than 10,000 plants was donated to Copenhagen University, along with the original drawings by Katja Anker.
