Gunter Pauli (born March 3, 1956 in Antwerp ) is an entrepreneur and designer and founder of The Blue Economy . He's been called "the Steve Jobs of Sustainability". Others called Gunter Pauli "the Che Guevara of sustainability".

Life and work

Gunter Pauli holds a degree in economics from Loyola's University in Belgium and an MBA from INSEAD in France.

He is an entrepreneur in various fields. In 1991 he bought 50% of the bankrupt detergent manufacturer Ecover and built a 100% ecological company building, which was completed in 1992.

His first book was the biography of Aurelio Peccei , the founder of the Club of Rome , whose assistant he was from 1979 to 1984. He has published several books as well as fairy tales for children that have been translated into 43 languages.

In 1989 he was elected as an independent member of the European Parliament , but declined the seat because of business obligations. Gunter Pauli cites the "Mozarteum Belgicum" as one of his greatest successes, the organization of the "Mozart Year" in Belgium and Japan, for which he was awarded the "Golden Medal of the State of Salzburg".

He is also the founder and former president of Worldwatch Europe and recipient of many honors and awards.

In 1994 he was called to the United Nations University in Tokyo to prepare the Kyoto Protocol (budget of 10 million USD per year over 3 years). There he co-initiated the " Zero Emissions Research Initiative (ZERI)" in Tokyo in 1994 with the support of the Japanese government and the United Nations University (UNU). At the end of the 1990s his work for the UNU ended. ZERI was renamed "Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives". During the development of the basic principles and initiative, the vision of a society and economy that would be called The Blue Economy developed in collaboration with researchers from 80 countries . In 2014, 34 organizations worldwide carried out 188 projects.

Gunter Pauli is in favor of the open source concept and refuses to register his designs.

He built the ZERI pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, which was the most popular exhibition area at the Expo with 6.4 million visitors.

He has lived in Kamakura , Japan , since 1994 , is married to Katherina Bach and has six children.
