Foundations of the Marienkapelle from 815 in the crypt of Hildesheim Cathedral during the renovation work (2011)

Gunthar had the legendary Marienkapelle built in 815 on the site of today's cathedral crypt , probably for the Hildesheim Marian reliquary donated by Ludwig the Pious to the new diocese , and around 825 the first cathedral south of the later Altfrid Cathedral, a double-towered basilica of St. Cäcilia was consecrated and furnished with relics of these saints acquired from Rome . During excavations in the cathedral area during the cathedral renovation 2010–2013, the foundations of both structures were found.
