Gustaf Nordbergs Vagnfabrik (short: Nordberg or Nordbergs ) was a Swedish body construction company that designed and built bodies for the chassis of European and American automobile manufacturers in the first half of the 20th century.

Company history

The company was founded by Gustaf Nordberg in Stockholm in 1893 or 1901, depending on the source . Nordbergs Vagnfabrik was a family business. The founder managed the company until his death in 1935, after which his sons Nils and Carl Nordberg took over the management.

In the first years of the 20th century, Nordberg built the interior of carriages, but about 1910 switched to the construction of automobile bodies. Nordberg was not limited to any particular segment. The company built state bodies and luxury vehicles as well as special versions of mid-range models and commercial vehicles. In the 1920s and 1930s, Nordberg dressed various American chassis, including Cadillacs and Buicks . A Cadillac built in 1938 went to the Swedish royal family . There were regular orders for bodies on Rolls-Royce chassis, of which Nordberg built a total of 35 from 1912 to 1953. Since 1930, numerous special bodies have also been built on Volvo chassis, including convertible versions of the PV51 and ambulances based on the PV830 .

Finally, Nordberg also built prototypes and concept vehicles. In 1933 the body of the Volvo Venus Bilo , one of the first automobiles with a pontoon body , was built at the Nordberg plant .

In 1953, Nordberg gave up the construction of car bodies. The last passenger car with a Nordberg body was a four-door notchback sedan with three side windows on the chassis of a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith LWB . Thereafter, the company focused on building ambulance vehicles. In 1957, Nordberg ceased operations completely. By then, Nordberg had produced around 1,000 automobile bodies.
