Gustav Brandt (art historian)

Gustav Brandt (born February 11, 1865 in Kiel , † April 20, 1919 in Voorde ) was a German art historian and museum director.

Life

Gustav Brandt, son of the Kiel lawyer and notary Heinrich Brandt, studied philosophy, art history, classical archeology, German literature and history in Kiel (1886–88), Marburg (1888–93 / 94) and then again in Kiel. In 1886 he was reciprocated in the Corps Holsatia . In 1895 he received his doctorate in philosophy in Kiel. He then worked at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg and at the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg . In May 1901 he took over the management of the Thaulow Museum in Kiel, the arts and crafts museum of the province of Schleswig-Holstein . He advocated the construction of an extension, which was inaugurated in 1911. He completely refurbished the museum from a modern perspective, adding numerous pieces that he had acquired. In the museum he set up numerous rooms with complete interiors ( Period Rooms ).

His interest was in the history of art in his native Schleswig-Holstein, and especially in folk art .
