Gustav Hartmann (politician, 1875)

Gustav Hartmann (born June 27, 1875 in Walldorf ; † May 30, 1940 in Heidelberg ) was a member of the Baden state parliament from 1913 to 1933.

Life

He was the son of a carpenter in Walldorf, was baptized Catholic and attended elementary school in his hometown until 1889 before he worked in the Walldorf cigar factory, where he completed an apprenticeship as a cigar maker and finally became a foreman in 1903. He was involved in trade unions at a young age, completed economic training at the Catholic workers' association in Mönchengladbach, and in 1905 was given a permanent position at the Central Association of Christian Tobacco Workers in Germany in Heidelberg. From 1909 to 1913 he was the main treasurer of the association in Düsseldorf , then second chairman of the association in Heidelberg. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Reich Tobacco Research Institute and contributed to several publications on the social situation of cigar workers. From 1913 to 1918 he was a member of the 54th electoral district (parts of the districts of Wiesloch and Bruchsal) in the Second Chamber of Baden , where he belonged to the center faction and was a member of the budget commission. Due to a heart condition, he was released from military service in the First World War . After 1919 he was a member of the Baden state parliament, initially as a member of constituency 4 (Land Commissioner District Mannheim), from 1921 of electoral district 7 (Heidelberg and Mosbach districts) and from 1929 of electoral district 17 (Sinsheim and Wiesloch). He was particularly committed to the social concerns of tobacco workers.
