Gustav Heinrich Daniel Hempel (born June 7, 1804 in Plau ; † August 8, 1864 in Kleeth ) was a German regional historian and author . He wrote several works on the state history and geography of Mecklenburg .

Life

Gustav Hempel was an older son of the headmaster of the same name at the Plauer Stadtschule (later pastor in Vietlübbe), (Johann) Gustav (Detlov) Hempel (1769–1842), and his wife Philippine Wilhelmine Luise, née. Lukow (1776–1840), daughter of a Plauer pastor and prepositus. A younger brother, Wilhelm (Theodor Ludwig) Hempel (1811–1869), became pastor in Marlow after several teaching positions.

Hempel grew up in Plau and Vietlübbe, where his father took over the pastoral position in 1817. He showed little interest in training as a businessman; instead he entered the service of Rittmeister von Blücher in Klein Breesen as a private tutor for a total of nine years in 1824, with whom he moved to Rosenow near Stavenhagen in 1826 . He then worked as an accounting officer for the construction of the Rostock-Neubrandenburger Chaussee , after its completion as a chausse money collector on the street, at the same time as a postal inspector in Rosenow.

Hempel dealt intensively with Mecklenburg regional studies and published a number of treatises. In 1829 the geographical description of the Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and -Strelitz appeared , which he dedicated to his employer. In 1835 he published the geographical-statistical-historical manual of the Mecklenburg country . An expanded edition of the work appeared with the participation of other authors as part of the Mecklenburgische Vaterlandskunde published by Wilhelm Raabe in 1857 .
