Gustav Kauffmann (born September 23, 1854 in Stolp ; † October 2, 1902 in Berlin ) was a lawyer, mayor and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Kauffmann attended high school in Stolp and the University of Berlin , where he studied law. In 1875 he became a trainee lawyer , in 1879 a court assessor and in 1880 he was admitted to the bar at the District Court I Berlin . In 1891 he became a notary in the district of the chamber court . He was also a city councilor in Berlin.

From 1890 until his death he was a member of the German Reichstag for the German Liberal Party and since 1893 for the Liberal People's Party .

In July 1901 he was elected second mayor by the Berlin city council , but Wilhelm II refused to confirm this election. Thereupon, on September 12, 1901, 109 of 124 city councilors elected him again as mayor. The official reason for the rejection was that he had to say goodbye as a lieutenant in the Guard Landwehr in 1882 because of his political activities for the Progress Party . It has also been suggested that his children not being baptized may have played a role.
