Gustav Reinhold Nyländer
Gustav Reinhold Nyländer (* around 1775 in Tallinn ; † 23. May 1825 in Kissy , now a district of Freetown , Sierra Leone ) was from Estonia originating Lutheran missionary and Africanist .
Life
Gustav Reinhold Nyländer studied from 1803 to 1805 at the Berlin Mission School . From 1806 he was in the service of the English Committee of the New Church Society . In the same year he went to Africa as the first Estonian missionary . The voyage from Europe to West Africa lasted over seven months. He first settled in Freetown as a pastor and school teacher before receiving a missionary assignment.
From 1812 to 1818 he lived in the settlement area of the Bullom in today's Sierra Leone, from 1818 until his death in 1825 under the Temne people . In 1814 Nyländer published a grammar of the Bullom language , a dictionary and a spelling book in London . His translation of the Gospel of Matthew was the first ever translation of the Bible into a language in Black Africa. In addition, Nyländer collected numerous ethnographic objects and folk poetry.
