The Estonian Scholarly Society ( Estonian : Õpetatud Eesti Selts ) is the oldest scientific society in Estonia . Your task is to research the language , culture and literature of the Estonians , especially the areas of philology , literary studies , folklore , ethnography , archeology , history , art history and numismatics .

history

The learned society was founded on January 18, 1838 in Dorpat (Estonian: Tartu) by the university professors Friedrich Georg von Bunge (law), Alexander Friedrich von Hueck (anatomy) and Friedrich Karl Hermann Kruse (history), the doctor and writer Friedrich Robert Fählmann as well the lecturer for Estonian language , Dietrich Heinrich Jürgenson . The seat of the society was the Imperial University of Dorpat, today's University of Tartu .

During the first few years, the publication of the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg with a German translation by the Society's meeting reports from 1857 to 1861 was of outstanding importance .

From around 1860, the field of activity shifted away from popular enlightenment to the scientific investigation of Estonian culture and language. In the second half of the 19th century the society already had over 300 members. In the meantime, in addition to Baltic Germans , more and more Estonians have joined. Social and university conflicts led to the fact that the Estonian scholarly society disintegrated at the beginning of the First World War . The re-establishment took place in 1919 under the Estonian National University of Tartu.

During the Soviet rule in Estonia, the society was first subordinated to the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic in the late 1940s, only to be completely dissolved in June 1950.

The re-establishment took place on October 10, 1988. Today the Estonian Learned Society has around 100 members and honorary members. From 1996 to 2008, Tiit Rosenberg , Professor of Estonian History, was President of the Society; since January 23, 2008 the archaeologist Heiki Valk and since January 29, 2014 Professor of Legal History Marju Luts-Sootak .
