Anton Buchholtz

Anton Buchholtz (born July 16, 1848 in Riga ; † October 3, 1901 there ) was a Baltic German lawyer and historian .

Live and act

The son of the educator and collector August Buchholtz attended the Gouvernementsgymnasium in Riga and studied in Dorpat from 1866 to 1873 . He was a member of the Fraternitas Rigensis . As a lawyer he worked in Riga from 1873 to 1890 in various functions in the city administration. He then worked as a private scholar and (like his father) collector of coins, Baltic views and portraits. He was curator of the Municipal Coin Cabinet, Museum Inspector of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia , Member of the Latvian Literary Society , Co-Director of the Literary Practical Citizens' Association in Riga and became an honorary member of the Estonian Literary Society in Reval and the Estonian Scholarly Society in Dorpat , full member of the Imperial Archaeological Society in Saint Petersburg , also Dr. phil. hc from the Albertus University of Königsberg . He wrote numerous essays on various topics of Baltic history. Like his father August, he and his three brothers (August, Arend and Alexander) contributed to the historical awareness of the writers in the Baltic provinces of the Baltic Sea.
