Julius Mark (born March 27, 1890 in the Virumaa region , † March 2, 1959 in Washington, DC ) was an Estonian linguist . He is considered to be a well-known researcher of the Finnish-Ugric languages. Mark served as President of the Estonian Scholarly Society (1929-1936) and was an honorary member.

Life

Mark was the son of a wealthy farming family. He attended the Alexander Gymnasium in Reval ( Tallinn ). In 1911/12 he began studying comparative Indo-European linguistics and ancient languages at the University of Dorpat ( Tartu ). In 1912 he continued his studies at the University in Helsinki on. In 1919, Mark received his doctorate from the university and on September 12, 1919, took up the position of professor for Ural linguistics at the university in Dorpat. In 1923 Mark was elected full professor. In the years 1922 to 1924 he was editor-in-chief of the Estonian linguistic journal " Eesti Keel " ( German Estonian language ).

In 1944 he fled the Red Army from Dorpat to Germany and on to Denmark . In 1947, Mark emigrated to the United States. There he taught the Russian and Finnish languages ​​at various universities.
