Carl Heinrich Constantin Gehewe (born February 12, 1796 in Dorpat ; † July 2, 1856 in Eger-Franzensbad ) was a Baltic German clergyman and promoter of the Estonian language .

Life

Carl's father Johannes Gehewe (* around 1757, master tailor) had moved to Dorpat from Hessen and married Katharina Poltin (* April 14, 1784) here.

Carl Gehewe attended high school in Tartu and studied here from 1814 to 1815 and from 1817 to 1819 theology ; he was awarded a silver medal for a prize work by the faculty. After working as a private tutor at Schloss Ringen in Livonia, he worked as a pastor in Ringen from 1820 to 1831 , and then looked after the Estonian rural community in Dorpat from 1831 until his death. He tried very hard to translate church texts into Estonian and wrote several writings for this purpose. He was one of the founders of the Estonian Scholarly Society , became its first president and held the office from 1838 to 1841, alternatively from 1842 to 1843. In this company he gave a number of lectures on the Estonian language. In 1855 he was elected an honorary member. For a long time he was also director of the city's widows and death benefit.

Gehewe died on a vacation trip in Eger-Franzensbad. He was married to Marie Moritz; his son Carl Wilhelm Gehewe was a neurologist .
