Friedrich Georg von Bunge (born March 1, ^jul. / 13. March  1802 ^greg. In Kiev ; † 9. April 1897 in Wiesbaden ) was a Baltic German legal historian and is considered the founder of the Baltic legal history.

Life

Friedrich Georg von Bunge came from the Kiev-based pharmacist family Bunge , which is derived from Georg Friedrich Bunge . His younger brother Alexander von Bunge became a botanist.

From 1819 he studied law at the University of Dorpat and completed his habilitation there in 1823 as a private lecturer . In 1831 he became associate professor and soon afterwards full professor at the University of Dorpat. In 1842 he became mayor and syndic of Reval . In September 1856 he was appointed as a senior civil servant in the second department of the emperor's office in Petersburg . In 1865 he moved to Germany , where he lived first in Gotha , then in Wiesbaden.

Friedrich Georg von Bunge achieved great merit, especially through his work on the provincial rights of Livonia , Estonia and Courland . He wrote numerous works on Baltic legal history based on German law. The civil code he compiled was valid in Latvia until 1937 and in Estonia until 1945.
