Gustav Sabath

Gustav Sabath (born May 1, 1863 in Ludwigsdorf , Oels district ; † November 21, 1952 in Pfullendorf ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician.

Live and act

After elementary school, Sabath completed an apprenticeship as a tailor . Until 1893 he worked in the profession he had learned. In 1887 he joined the independent tailors' union . A year later he was chairman of the association's branch in Hamburg . Between 1893 and 1896 he was the full-time manager of the union there. From 1896 Sabath was secretary of the general commission of the trade unions in Germany, initially based in Hamburg and later in Berlin . From 1902 to 1928 he was an unpaid member of the general commission or the ADGB federal executive committee. His main occupation was from 1920 to 1928 union secretary of the Berlin union commission and chairman of the ADGB local committee of Greater Berlin. In addition, from 1903 to 1920 he was editor of the association's specialist newspaper for tailors . In 1928, Sabath retired.

Politically, Sabath belonged to the SPD and joined the USPD in 1917 . With the annexation of the rest of the USPD, he returned to the SPD. For a time (until 1933) he was one of the chairmen of the SPD district executive in Berlin. From 1923 to 1932 Sabath was a member of the Prussian state parliament .

During the National Socialist rule he was briefly imprisoned in 1933.
