Gustav Schefranek , also Gustav Schefraneck ( February 22, 1862 in Skalica , Hungary - July 29, 1935 in Hanover ) was an Austrian theater actor, director and playwright.

Life

Schefranek, son of a businessman, underwent an examination by Carl Arnau in 1881 , on whose recommendation he was accepted into the drama school of the Vienna Conservatory, where Bernhard Baumeister and Friedrich Mitterwurzer (?) Were his teachers and which he left as an award-winning student.

He received his first engagement in 1883 at the court theater in Meiningen , where he appeared for the first time as “Stüssi” in Tell , but after a while he became “Isolani”, “Casca”, “Antolikus”, “Raoul” etc. entrusted and at the same time given him the opportunity to take part in the tour of this famous troupe (through almost all of Europe).

In 1890 he joined the Association of the German Theater in Berlin, at the same time switched to the subject of the first character roles, worked in Teplitz in 1893, in Hanau in 1894 and in Barmen in 1895 and joined the Berlin Theater Association in 1896.

He had previously played roles like "Shylock", "Nathan", "Mephisto", "Alba", "Geßler", "Selbitz", "Richter von Zalamea", "Wurzelsepp", "Perjurer", "Steinklopfer" etc. successfully , so his main activity at the Berlin theater now became that of a director. He found the best school at the Deutsches Theater with his early awakened sense of artistic design under the direction of the Duke of Meiningen and those of Adolph L'Arronges and August Förster .

Nonetheless, he was also active in the character subject. He was a finely observant actor and his characters were real characters, not just theatrical characters. He always tried to hit the right note, which he also succeeded in almost without exception, supported by constant striving.

But Schefranek also dealt with literary work and arrived at the Berlin theater in May 1899 his comedy the bathing season for the first time representation.

He stayed at the Berlin Theater in Charlottenstrasse until 1905 and most recently also directed at the Free Volksbühne Berlin . From 1905 to 1908 he worked in Karlsruhe at the Grand Ducal Court Theater . From the 1908/1909 season he was under contract at the Royal Theater Hanover. In 1922 he returned to Berlin, this time he went to the Schiller Theater .
