life and work

Marissiaux was born in Marles-sur-Canche, a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in France. From 1890 he lived in Liège, Belgium . There he ran a photo studio for portraits.

At the turn of the 20th century he made several photo reports about the area around Liège. In these he presented the Liège region primarily through photos taken in foggy weather conditions. In 1903 he was commissioned to take photographs of the coal mines in Wallonia. The recordings made on the basis of this order satisfy both documentary aspects and the requirements of the pictorialistic style of photography. He also became famous for the photographs he took during a trip to Italy in 1905 that took him to Veneto, Tuscany and Umbria. In addition to landscape photographs, his work also includes cityscapes, portraits and nudes. His photographic style is characterized by a pronounced pictorialistic view using stylistic elements of symbolism .

In 1908 he was able to publish a representative selection of his recordings under the title Visions d'artistes .

Marissiaux was a member or founding member of the "Association Belge de la Photography" and the "Société Française de Photographie." He won important prizes at photo exhibitions in Roubaix in 1899 and Turin in 1903.

His photographic work was created between 1895 and 1918. Together with Léonard Misonne , he is considered the most important Belgian art photographer of his time.

Works by Gustave Marissiaux are exhibited in the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi , Belgium.
