Pan Am is an American television series directed by Jack Orman and produced by Jack Orman Productions and Out of the Blue Entertainment for the US broadcaster ABC . The focus of the plot, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the early 1960s, is the flight crew of Pan American World Airways . Pan Am was considered the leading international airline during the early days of the commercial jet age and jet set . In the US, the series first aired on September 25, 2011 on ABC. In May 2012, ABC announced the end of the series after the first season.

It has been sold to Great Britain , France , Canada , Spain , Japan , Australia and over 100 other countries , among others . In Germany, the series has been broadcast on Sixx since February 2013 .

action

The series takes place in the 1960s and is about the work of flight attendants Maggie, Kate, Laura and Colette, and pilots Dean and Ted. Maggie is the pragmatic purserette who is temporarily suspended from flight operations at the beginning of the series due to repeated violations of the uniform wearing regulations . On the recommendation of her colleague Bridget Pierce, Kate is recruited by the CIA as a secret agent. At the same time, her particularly good-looking younger sister Laura tries to gain a foothold as a new stewardess at the airline and soon gets on the cover of Life Magazine in Pan-Am uniform . The French stewardess Colette realizes that the man she loves is married and has to contend with a traumatic childhood. Dean searches for his missing, near-fiancé Bridget, while Ted tries to put his past as a failed military pilot behind him. On their flights, the crew will witness various historical events including the legendary speech by John F. Kennedy in Berlin .

In order to shoot the series, Sony first had to negotiate with the US railroad company Pan Am Systems , the current owners of the Pan Am logo. Negotiations took place over a total of three years. Producer Nancy Hult Ganis , a former airline stewardess, finally won over the owners: “I said it was going to be an adventure about young women exploring the world. They understood what it meant to me. It was just extraordinary for a young girl to be able to travel and be so independent. ”Ganis managed to get hold of the airline's original uniforms, but the color had to be changed slightly for the series, as the original blue turned into blue-gray due to the high color resolution of the camera worked. They were also tailored a little more body-hugging. To recreate the authentic makeup of the time, the official stewardess manual from the 1960s was used.

Although the series shows the characters in different cities around the world, the series was filmed in and around New York , such as Cold Coast Studios on Long Island or the Brooklyn Navy Yard . For the scenes inside the aircraft, the inventory of real aircraft was used, which were painted in the colors of the Pan Am. According to the director Thomas Schlamme , four to five additional days were needed to re- shoot various scenes of the pilot episode . The cost of the pilot was around 10 million US dollars , which made it one of the most expensive pilot episodes of the season alongside Terra Nova . For some scenes in the following episodes, according to Jaunted, John Travolta provided the team with his Boeing 707 , which was specially provided with the Pan Am logo using a vinyl cover.

Ganis said in an interview when asked about the show's message, “It was a time when we were treated like hosts. It was friendlier and more interactive. Nearly 80 percent of the crew were from around the world. ”When asked about story arcs, series creator Jack Orman pointed out that the airline worked closely with the United States Department of State , which is reflected in the story of characters Kate Cameron and Bridget Pierce. Episodes dealing with terrorism , with which the airline Pan Am had to fight especially in the 1970s , would not be planned "at the moment".

On October 24, 2011, it was announced that Steven Maeda would join the team as show runner and new producer. The background was the falling audience ratings for the series on the rather unfavorable slot at 10 p.m. on Sunday. Although ratings were no longer satisfactory, ABC commissioned five more scripts in November 2011 and confirmed that Ashley Greene , et al. a. known from Twilight - Till (s) dawn , was engaged for a recurring role.

As initially on November 18, 2011 the broadcaster ABC indirectly announced the discontinuation of the series and would only produce another episode of the series as a gap filler, the actress Karine Vanasse confirmed the end of the series on Twitter at the end of November. However, ABC denied reports of the cancellation, saying the series would continue to be produced. The official removal of ABC followed in May 2012.

In the US, the series started on September 25, 2011 on the US broadcaster ABC . The pilot episode was seen by around 11.06 million people and achieved a rating of 3.1 in the advertising-relevant target group of 18–49 year olds. The consequences that followed resulted in significantly lower visual participation. The rate for the seventh episode was just over five million and achieved a rating of 1.7. In the weeks leading up to the season finale in mid-February 2012, the ratings dropped to just 2.5 to 4 million viewers and a rating of 1.2.

Germany

ProSiebenSat.1 Media acquired the broadcasting rights for Germany at the beginning of October 2011 . The series has been broadcast on the Sixx channel since February 4, 2013 .

International

In Canada , the series began broadcasting at the same time as the USA on the two channels Bravo! and CTV . In Sweden it has been broadcast on TV3 since October 2011 , in Ireland on RTÉ Television , in Norway on TV3 and since November 2011 in Portugal on SIC . It has been broadcast in the UK since November 16, 2011 on BBC Two . It has been broadcast in Japan since March 2012. In total, Pan Am has been sold in over 100 countries. The series was sometimes much more successful internationally than in the USA. The pilot episode in Sweden received 7.6 percent, the highest audience rating ever recorded for the premiere of a foreign series on this channel. However, there, too, public interest sank rapidly.

The series has a Metascore of 67/100 at Metacritic based on 28 reviews. On TV.com , the series is rated 8.2 / 10 based on 523 votes, and on IMDb.com it is rated 6.6 / 10 based on 12,798 votes. The Insider listed the series among the ten best series of autumn 2011 and called it "one of the roundest series of the new season". However, critics complained that the series tries to show the 60s and stewardesses more glamorous than they actually were. The series was sometimes accused of glorifying sexism and natural selection, as it shows the humiliating procedures the stewardesses had to undergo and the character Ted in the pilot postulates that they are a new breed of women.

Pan Am romanticizes the past, whereas Mad Men , on AMC, takes pleasure in slyly mocking antiquated mores. If only for the costumes and '60s music, Pan Am is amusing to see at least once, but if it has any instructive benefit at all, it's as a mood indicator for these times, not those.
