Gustave Zédé
Gustave Alexandre Zédé (* 1825 in Paris ; † April 26, 1891 ) was a French submarine pioneer.
Life
Zédé was the son of a marine engineer and trained at an École Polytechnique. He was friends with Henri Dupuy de Lôme , who valued his high intelligence. In 1870, Zédé and Dupuy de Lôme constructed the first steerable aerostat . During the development of a new type of electric motor, this led Zédé to collaborate with the commandant of the Infantry Krebs and subsequently to the development of submarine technology. In 1886, Zédé wrote in a report by the Académie des Sciences on April 5 about the relationship between aircraft and watercraft.
In 1880, Zédé joined Forges et Chantiers . The collaboration with Krebs continued and in November 1888 the first experiments with the Gymnote , a vehicle with an electric motor, were made off Toulon . Before the experiments had led to a practical result, Zédé died as a result of an explosion that had happened to him in the laboratory.
Several vehicles were named after Gustave Zédé, so the submarine Gustave Zédé , the submarine class Gustave Zédé (including the type ship Gustave Zédé ), the submarine escort ship Gustave Zédé from 1934 and the Gustave Zédé from 1937, the had a checkered history.
