Guus Rimmelzwaan

Guus F. Rimmelzwaan (* 1959 ) is a Dutch virologist and immunologist.

Rimmelzwaan studied in Amsterdam and received his doctorate from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven in 1990 (Dissertation: Canine parvovirus infection : Novel approaches to diagnosis and immune prophylaxis. ). As a post-doctoral student he worked there on vaccines against the FIV and from 1992 to 1994 on vaccines against HIV- 1 at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland . Since 1994 he has been group leader in flu immunology at the Erasmus Medical Center of the University of Rotterdam , where he became a professor. In 2018 he received a Humboldt Professorship at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover .

Rimmelzwaan did research in particular on flu viruses (including bird flu ). Among other things, he investigated the possibility of the spread of human flu viruses via cats. He demonstrated the role of T cells in the defense against influenza viruses.
