history

The hospital was founded in 1721 by Thomas Guy , a publisher who had gotten rich from the South Seas Bubble . It was originally intended for the incurable patients at St Thomas' Hospital . Over the years the hospital has expanded. The original buildings were on a site on St. Thomas Street. Even after bomb damage from World War II , the 18th century chapel and the bust of Thomas Guy remained intact. Hundreds of beds were added in 1829 with William Hunt's £ 200,000 estate. The south wing was named after Hunt. This wing was replaced in 2000 by the new New Hunt's House .

The 34-story Guy's Tower was added in 1974 and is the tallest hospital building in the world at 143 meters. The tower was designed by Watkins Gray .

Over 8,000 employees work in the two hospitals, Guy's and St Thomas'. They are the oldest teaching hospitals in the world at nearly 900 years old.

In 2005 the children's department was moved to the newly built Evelina Children's Hospital .
