Guy Calléja (born May 29, 1938 in Bordeaux ) is a former French football player and coach .

Career

Time as a player

As a youth, Calléja went through various junior teams of the Girondins Bordeaux professional club and was trained as a central defender until he was appointed to the professional squad for the first time under coach André Gérard during the 1956/57 season and was allowed to play his first four games in the second-highest French division. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, the player gained importance at the age of 19 when he made 22 league appearances in his second season with the professionals. Then he was not only one of the top performers, but was also involved with five goals in the promotion to the first division, which the team succeeded in 1959. However, this meant that Calléja was ousted in defense by Claude Rey and also had to accept the direct relegation a year later.

In the second division, however, he became a regular player again and, after climbing up in 1963, was one of the eleven that reached seventh place in the table; Even more important was the move into the cup final in the same year in which Calléja ran up, even if he could not avert a 2-0 defeat against Olympique Lyon . This brought the team a participation in the UEFA Cup despite the failure , but it was not crowned with success. In the league, Bordeaux was able to improve further and Calléja missed the championship behind FC Nantes in 1965 , which is why he had to be content with the runner-up; the club took the same place the following year. Personally, the year 1966 brought Calléja an appointment to the French national B team, for which he played his only game in the national jersey on March 20 in a 2-2 draw against the A team of Morocco. In the course of the following years he remained an integral part of a team that settled in the top half of the table. He occupied the position of team captain when Bordeaux made it into the 1968 Cup final , which was lost 2-1 to AS Saint-Étienne , and held the same position when they failed again in the 1969 Cup final due to a 2-0 defeat against Olympique Marseille . In the same year he returned to Bordeaux after 13 years with two runners-up and three cup finals, without having won a title. At the age of 31 he found a new employer in 1969 in the second division club Gazélec FC Ajaccio .

Time as a player-coach

At Ajaccio, despite his advanced age, he was one of the main eleven; In December 1971 he took over the post of coach as the successor to Pierre Cahuzac , but continued his active career as a player. At the end of his first season as a coach, however, he had to accept relegation to the third division in 1972, with the club still clinging to him. Calléja also remained active as a player and was promoted to the second division in 1975. At the same time he ended his playing career at the age of 37 after 258 first division games with 12 goals, 190 second division games with 21 goals and 59 third division games with 6 goals.

Time as a trainer

Despite the termination of his career as a player, Calléja Ajaccio remained loyal as a coach, but left the club a year later after he had previously managed to stay with this; instead he returned to Bordeaux, where he headed the training center for young players until 1980. That year he moved back to Ajaccio, where he first saved the club from relegation to the third division, which he did not succeed in 1982. Nonetheless, he stayed at his post and achieved re-promotion in 1986, which was followed by relegation in 1988. He resigned in February 1989, but was reappointed in the summer of the same year. Although he was promoted to the second division in 1990, he resigned one more time. For a long time he was no longer active in football until he was hired as an interim coach for the first division club AS Cannes at the end of the 1997/98 season . However, he could no longer prevent the impending relegation and finally ended his coaching career in 1998.
