Gwede Mantashe

Samson Gwede Mantashe (born June 21, 1955 in Lower Cala , Cape Province ) is a South African politician and trade unionist . Since 2018 he has been a minister in the Ramaphosa I and Ramaphosa II cabinets .

Life

Mantashe worked for a coal company from 1975 and joined the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), of which he was chairman for the Witbank division from 1982 to 1984. In 1985 he was elected regional secretary of the union and in 1988 national organization director. Between 1994 and 1998 he acted first as deputy general secretary of the NUM, then as general secretary until 2006. At the same time he studied at the University of South Africa , where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce in 1997 and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) in 2002. In 2007 he became chairman of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and general secretary of the African National Congress . In this role, he is also a member of the central executive committee of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). In addition to his party positions, Mantashe is Director at Samancor, a mining company. In 2018 he was appointed Minister of Mineral Resources (roughly: "Minister for Mining"). In 2019, his portfolio was expanded to include Mineral Resources and Energy .

In 1995, Mantashe was the first trade unionist to be elected to the board of directors of a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange , namely Samancor .
