life and work

Gyde Callesen was born in Flensburg in 1975, where she lived until she graduated from high school. She studied German, philosophy and biology in Aachen and Hanover . She has lived and worked as a freelance writer in Hanover since 2000. She taught at the Leibniz University in Hanover and is a lecturer in literary writing. Since 2007 she has had her own writing school in Hanover, where she teaches laypeople and professionals the tools of writing. Furthermore, she initiated and led various reading series in Hanover and the surrounding area. She is a member of the board of the Association of German Writers and the Federal Association of Young Authors .

Gyde Callesen works together with visual and performing artists and designs performances and installations . She is particularly connected to dance and completed more than twenty years of training in classical and modern dance. Since 2003 she has been practicing Asian healing and martial arts intensively.

In her work at the Frauennotruf Hannover, where she has headed writing workshops since 2005, she developed the LEAF method, which combines elements of resource-oriented trauma work according to Luise Reddemann with literary writing techniques.

In her works, she deals with the present in a critical and humorous way. In her debut novel Maya my girl she portrays the life of a person diagnosed with post- traumatic stress disorder . Her short prose is characterized by bizarre-bizarre characters who are searching for their identity in a strangely real-surreal world. The multiple award-winning poetry alternates between socially critical, sharp texts and poems with a magical world of images.
