The Gymnasium Dachsberg is a Roman Catholic upper level secondary school of the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales in the former Dachsberg Castle in the market town of Prambachkirchen in the Eferding district in Upper Austria .

history

In 1921 the Salesian Order bought Dachsberg Castle in the Upper Austrian municipality of Prambachkirchen from the Central Bank of the German Savings Banks . The castle was built in the 17th and 18th centuries after Dachsberg Castle, which was owned by the Daxberger (also Dachsberger) family, burned down in 1672. In addition, the Salesians also acquired the Gröswang farm and in 1926 the Meierhof next to the castle .

As early as December 1920, the first 24 students came from Schmiding , where students had been taught by Sales Oblates since 1902. At first the students were only in Dachsberg as private students and had to take their exams first in the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster , later in the Bundesgymnasium Ried . In the school year 1935/36 there were all four classes of the Untergymnasium in Dachsberg for the first time, before that there were only two or three.

During the Second World War , the grammar school was closed against the will of the then headmaster Karl Eisenbarth. Only a few priests were allowed to stay to look after the castle. This was badly damaged in the war. During the last days of the war it was shelled by American allies. Nevertheless, the school operation was resumed with a few students in the 1945/46 school year. Karl Eisenbarth became director again. From 1948/49 there were again all four classes of the lower grammar school with 63 students. The number of pupils rose continuously over the next few years to around 100, which remained so until 1980, as long as Dachsberg was run as a boarding school for boys. During this time, the building was gradually expanded - for example, a chapel and a new boarding school building were built - but also cases of abuse that only became known in 2010 . The most recent documented incidents of sexual assault on boarding school students date back to 1998. In 2017, further cases of serious sexual abuse from the 1970s and violent assaults from the 1980s came to the public.

Since Dachsberg was only a lower grammar school, the majority of the students then attended the upper school of the federal grammar school in Ried. When it became clear that the model of the four-class lower grammar school would be phased out, the Salesian order was faced with the decision to close the grammar school or to expand it around 1980. Ultimately, the decision was made for the latter. The school was also opened to external students and an upper level was introduced, which should create the opportunity for the first time to take the Matura in Dachsberg . In 1989 the first two classes graduated from Dachsberg. Since then, 710 pupils (as of 2009) have completed the Dachsberg grammar school with the final examination. In 2009 there were three Matura classes for the first time.

From 1980 to the first decade of the new millennium, the number of students and classes grew steadily, which also required a lot of renovation work. In addition to renovations in the castle, a new building was added in the early 1990s. The Meierhof was converted into a religious house and in 2000 a multi-purpose hall was built. Since 2010 the boarding school building has been gradually converted into classes. This renovation was completed in 2011 and so the first grades (ground floor) and third grades (1st floor) are currently in this south wing of the former boarding school. On the second floor there are upper school classes and the break hall for fourth to eighth grade students.

In the spring of 2016, extensive renovation work began in the school's administration wing, which, in addition to the management, secretariat and administration, also houses numerous classrooms. The renovation also included the creative area on the third floor of the castle. In addition, the administration wing on the ground floor was extended by an extension - the so-called "AudiDax". This multimedia extension functions as a division class and is used for cross-class schoolwork and the written school leaving examination. The renovation work was completed in time for the start of school in autumn 2016.

Situation today and educational offer

Today (as of 2017) the school has 795 students in 33 classes as well as 45 teachers and 39 teachers. The former boarding school has been closed since 2010 and new classrooms have been created where the boarding school was located.

According to its own information, the Dachsberg high school is characterized by its diversity. At the Gymnasium Dachsberg you can choose between Latin and French as a second foreign language before the 3rd grade, from the 5th grade you can also choose Spanish. A further language - Italian, Czech or Chinese - can be chosen as an elective subject from the 6th grade onwards. In addition to the modern language focus, the school has a creative-communicative focus as well as a focus on computer science, which can be deepened with elective subjects. Since the school year 2010/11 there has been an upper level secondary school with a focus on natural sciences in addition to the now existing grammar school .

The Dachsberg high school introduced a new time model in the 2017/18 school year. Since this change, the lessons are no longer 50 minutes, but 73 minutes. In addition, there are so-called "flex times", 43-minute units that the students can use to study or to complete work assignments. The pupils can choose freely in which classes or with which teachers they spend the flex time, as they can register via the school website. This time model is intended to promote independence and time management.

Since the Gymnasium Dachsberg is a private school, school fees have to be paid. This is currently 100 euros a month, ten times a year.
