The Gymnasium Schloss Wittgenstein ( GSW for short ) is a gymnasium in Bad Laasphe ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The students are taught by around 40 teachers. In 1997, the school was named School of the Year as part of the school project "Together - For One Another" , which was carried out in cooperation with the MS and Parkinson's Clinic of the State Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) . The Wittgenstein Castle Realschule is connected to the school building .

history

The grammar school was founded in October 1953 as a boarding school for boys. Initially, the living and teaching rooms were exclusively in the castle . In 1956 a school building was built for the grammar school and the newly founded secondary school. The gym, a teacher's house and a sports field were built in 1961 and 1962. From 1966 at the latest, the classrooms for the Sexta and Quinta were located in the gym building .

Finally, in 1974, due to the low occupancy of the boarding school, the boarding school was also opened for girls and the school also for pupils from the surrounding areas. The boarding school moved from Wittgenstein Castle to the school building in 1996. In 1999 the “Red House” was rebuilt and equipped with computers. Now, in two specialist rooms, computer science skills are imparted to high school and secondary school students. Since the year 2000, lessons have gradually been relocated to Wittgenstein Castle due to a lack of space. In the meantime, the entire upper level is taught for the most part in the castle after construction work has been completed.

A ceremony was held on March 27, 2009 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary.

While the number of pupils at the Schloss Wittgenstein high school stagnated until the mid-1990s, it has been rising steadily since the 1998/99 school year. This is mainly due to the influx of schoolchildren from neighboring towns and areas ( Dietzhölztal , Biedenkopf and Bad Berleburg ).

Spatial equipment

In addition to the classrooms, the Gymnasium Schloss Wittgenstein has specialist rooms. Among other things, there is a biology and chemistry room, two physics rooms, a lecture hall for chemistry and biology and two IT rooms with PCs . Since 2006 there has been a natural science room ( “NaWi” ) for biology, chemistry and physics as well as a “self-study center”.

particularities

Seal of approval "Individual support"

On February 3, 2007, the school minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Barbara Sommer , awarded the grammar school the "Individual Promotion Seal of Approval" from the State Ministry for Schools and Further Education. This recognized the numerous teaching and extracurricular activities of the school for gifted students and for students with special needs.

There are numerous remedial courses at the school - including some for “ career changers ” from secondary schools and secondary schools. Since the 2007/2008 school year there has been a tutor program in which tenth grade and upper grade students give tuition in the main subjects in small groups. There are also numerous working groups that are geared towards the individual talents of the students.

Events

Every year there is a Christmas market on the first Friday in December. On this, the classes of the grammar school and the secondary school sell homemade food and drinks as well as objects of all kinds. There is also an annual raffle and a stage program.

Use of new techniques

A school newspaper called “Schlossgeist” based on a blog has existed at GSW since the 2013/2014 school year . The blog was discontinued in 2015. Furthermore, an app for the digital substitution plan has been available for the students since the beginning of 2014 . The Android software was developed by a student.

Wheelchair basketball

The school has been active in wheelchair basketball since the 1990s. The school has a large number of wheelchairs that are used in class. In school projects, the integration of people with illnesses into sports therapy was tested together with schoolchildren through sport. Furthermore, through the engagement of a teacher, there is a “wheelchair sports community Schloss Wittgenstein”, which consists of people from the region of different age groups - with and without handicaps.
