Gymnema acids are triterpene - glycosides that suppress the sweet taste . They were isolated from the Indian creeper ( Gymnema sylvestre ). Hodulcine from the leaves and roots of the Japanese raisin tree Hovenia dulcis , Gurmarin (also from Gymnema sylvestre , but a protein ), lactisol or ziziphen from the Chinese breast date have a similar effect . The substances are used especially in the USA as a weight loss aid or by diabetics to suppress their craving for sweets.
