Gymnocalycium alboareolatum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet alboareolatum is derived from the Latin words albus for 'white' and areolatus for 'with areoles'.

description

Gymnocalycium alboareolatum grows individually with flattened, spherical, glaucous shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. A large taproot is formed. The nine to eleven ribs are straight and have clear, up to 1 centimeter long, chin-like protrusions. Central spines are absent. The six to seven brown radial spines bent towards the plant body are stiff and up to 1 centimeter long.

The silver-white flowers reach a length of up to 6.5 centimeters and have a diameter of 4.5 centimeters. The blue-green fruits are egg to club-shaped and 2.5 to 3 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium alboareolatum is widespread in the Argentine province of La Rioja at altitudes of 1000 to 1500 meters.

It was first described in 1985 by Walter Rausch .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
