Gymnocalycium ambatoense is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ambatoense means 'from the location in the Sierra de Ambato (Argentina)'.

description

Gymnocalycium ambatoense grows individually with flattened spherical to spherical, dark green shoots and reaches heights of 5 to 10 centimeters with diameters of up to 15 centimeters. Mostly fiber roots are formed. The nine to 17 ribs have distinct chin-like protrusions. The yellowish-brown thorns turn a little pink- gray with age. The single central spine, sometimes missing, sometimes up to three, is straight or slightly curved, protruding and 2 to 5 centimeters long. The nine to eleven, slightly curved or protruding radial spines are up to 2.5 centimeters long.

The bell-shaped, silky white flowers have a light pink central stripe. They reach a length of 2.5 to 4.5 centimeters and have a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The dark green fruits are flattened, spherical and up to 1.7 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium ambatoense is widespread in the Argentine province of Catamarca in the Sierra de Ambato at altitudes of 900 to 1100 meters.

It was first described in 1980 by Jörg Piltz .
