Gymnocalycium buenekeri is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Rudolf Heinrich Büneker, a cactus collector of German origin from Brazil.

description

Gymnocalycium buenekeri grows in dense groups with dark, dull green, flattened spherical to short cylindrical shoots , which reach heights of up to 15 centimeters with diameters of 10 centimeters and more. The usually five broadly rounded ribs are shallowly notched between the areoles . The three to five stiff, slightly curved, initially pale yellow thorns later turn darker brown. They are up to 2.5 inches long.

The light peach-pink to pink- red flowers are up to 4.5 centimeters long and 6.5 centimeters in diameter. The green fruits are somewhat cylindrical to ovoid.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium buenekeri is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

It was first described in 1978 by GJ Swales .
