Gymnocalycium castellanosii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Argentine botanist Alberto Castellanos (1896–1968).

description

Gymnocalycium castellanosii grows individually with cloudy blue-green, spherical to elongated spherical shoots , which reach heights of up to 15 centimeters with a diameter of 10 centimeters. The ten to twelve broad and flat ribs are divided into small, sharply separated humps. The strong, straight thorns are whitish and have a darker tip. There is a single central spine. The five to seven radial spines are up to 2.5 inches long.

The bell-shaped to funnel-shaped, white and pink tinged flowers are up to 4.5 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The green fruits are spherical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium castellanosii is distributed in the Argentine provinces of La Rioja , Córdoba and San Juan at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters.

It was first described in 1936 by Curt Backeberg .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
