Gymnocalycium fischeri is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Czech cactus collector Ladislav Fischer.

description

Gymnocalycium fischeri grows individually with bluish-gray-green, flat spherical shoots that reach heights of up to 6 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters (rarely up to 15 centimeters). The eight to twelve straight ribs are deeply notched and tubercular. The areoles, which are initially dirty and white , are later bare. The single central spine , rarely up to four, is only formed on older plants. The five to seven (rarely up to nine) radiating, awl, rigid radial spines are gray-brown. They are black-brown at their base and light horn-colored at the top. The radial spines have a length of 1.2 to 2.2 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped, variable ivory to light pink flowers have a dark pink throat. They are up to 8 centimeters long and 7 centimeters in diameter. The blue-green fruits are spindle to club-shaped and reach a length of 2.5 to 3.8 centimeters. They tear open vertically.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium fischeri is widespread in the Argentine province of San Luis in the west to southeast of the foothills of the Sierra de San Luis at altitudes of up to 1300 meters.

It was first described in 2002 by Josef Jakob Halda , Petr Kupčák , Emil Lukašik and Jaromír Sladkovský .
