Gymnocalycium gaponii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Russian cactus lover Victor Gapon.

description

Gymnocalycium gaponii grows individually with dull green to light olive-green, depressed spherical shoots , which reach heights of about 2.5 centimeters with diameters of 5 to 6 centimeters (rarely up to 8.5 centimeters). The eight to nine (rarely up to eleven) wide and flat ribs are notched transversely and divided into flat cusps with small, chin-like protrusions. The single central spine is only developed in large plants. The five to seven awl, rigid, straight or slightly twisted radial spines are bent towards the shoot. The radial spines are dirty white and have a brownish base. They have a length of 1.3 to 1.6 centimeters.

The slender white to light pink flowers are 5.7 to 6.5 centimeters (rarely up to 7.4 centimeters) long and have a diameter of 4.2 to 5 centimeters. When ripe, the olive-green fruits are elongated, egg-shaped to club-shaped and reach a length of 1.6 to 2.2 centimeters and a diameter of 0.8 to 1.3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium gaponii is distributed in the Argentine province of Córdoba in the west of the Sierra Grande at altitudes of 900 meters.

It was first described in 2002 by Gert Josef Albert Neuhuber .
