Gymnocalycium Pflanzii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Karl Pflanz (1872–1925).

description

Gymnocalycium Pflanzii usually grows individually and sprouts with yellowish green to olive-green, purplish, flattened spherical shoots and reaches heights of 6 to 8 centimeters with diameters of up to 15 centimeters and more. The eight to ten massive ribs are rounded, the areoles on them are long oval. There is a short central spine . The six to nine strong, very stiff and conspicuously backward curved radial spines are somewhat pink-brown to whitish-brown and have a darker point. They are up to 2.5 inches long.

The short-tube to funnel-shaped whitish pink to salmon pink flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters and have the same diameter. The reddish purple to carmine-red fruits are spherical. They reach a diameter of 1.5 to 2 centimeters and contain a red pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium Pflanzii is widespread in Paraguay , southern Bolivia and northern Argentina at altitudes of 500 to 2500 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus Pflanzii in 1923 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Erich Werdermann placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium in 1935 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Gymnocalycium Pflanzii subsp. vegetii
  • Gymnocalycium Pflanzii subsp. argentinense H.Till & W.Till
  • Gymnocalycium Pflanzii subsp. dorisiae Amerh.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
