Gymnocalycium ragonesei is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Argentine botanist Arturo Enrique Ragonese (1909–1992).

description

Gymnocalycium ragonesei usually grows individually with greenish gray to dull brown, very flat spherical shoots that barely protrude from the soil surface and reaches a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The seven to ten very flat ribs are indistinctly grooved across. The up to six thin to almost hair-like, whitish thorns are darker at their tips and up to 3 millimeters long.

The white flowers have a slightly reddish throat. They reach a length of 3 to 4 centimeters and the same diameter. The greenish-brown fruits are egg-shaped to spindle-shaped and up to 2.5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium ragonesei is widespread in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca and Córdoba at altitudes of up to 500 meters.

It was first described in 1950 by Alberto Castellanos .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
