Gymnocalycium robustum grows individually with gray or gray-green to slightly mauve-colored, depressed spherical shoots and reaches heights of 3 to 5 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 11 centimeters. The nine to eleven broad to flat, blunt ribs are clearly furrowed across and divided into low humps with a chin-like protrusion. There is no central spine . The five to seven stiff radial spines are up to 1.5 inches long. One of them is directed downwards, the rest sideways. When dry, the radial spines are lime-white. Moist radial spines are yellowish and brown at the tip and base.

The broad, funnel-shaped, white flowers have a pink throat. They reach a length of up to 6 centimeters (rarely up to 7 centimeters) and a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The club-shaped or, rarely, spindle-shaped fruits are gray. They have a length of 4 to 4.5 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters.
