Gyrinus marinus is a species of beetle in the tumbler family(Gyrinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 4.5 to 7 millimeters. Their body is colored matt black on the upper side; at most they have a very weak metallic luster. The underside is colored completely or partially dark and has a metallic sheen. The wings have strong, often fine, even rows of dots. These are a little more delicate on the inside and finely chagrined all over the base (with a grain pattern). The tip of the wing is not straight. Basally there is another short, inclined row consisting of three points next to the scutellum . The epipleurs of both the pronotum and the wing cover are shiny metallic. The legs are yellow, the claw link is brown.

Occurrence

The species is mainly found in Northern Europe. It occurs from the British Isles via Denmark, the south of Norway, Sweden and Finland (to Lapland ) to the north of Russia. In the south, it spreads from France via Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, northern Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland to Russia. The species is also found in the Balkans. It is widespread in Central Europe, common in the north and rare in the south. Contrary to its name, it has no relation to the "sea".
