history

The Häderlis Bridge 1979

The Häderlis Bridge was built in 1649 to replace an older footbridge. On the night of August 24th to 25th, 1987, a flood destroyed the historic bridge. In 1991 the canton of Uri built an identical stone arch bridge at this point with the help of the federal government and the Swiss Association of Builders .

Since the bridge is an important testimony to the architectural and cultural history of the Urnertal , popular with the population and viewed as an elegant and well-designed structure, it was ensured that it was faithfully restored. First, the geometry of the old bridge was restored using the existing remains and old documents. Existing engravings and an extensive collection of photographs helped. A comparison with other bridge structures, such as the Zollbrücke in Göschenen, also helped in the planning .

In order to achieve a restoration as true to the original as possible, the stones were extracted from a quarry 300 meters away, which were only worked by hand; Machine processing such as milling was dispensed with. Even then, the bridge consisted of granite blocks that were dismantled in Göschenen.

A plaque on site explains the history and the reconstruction of the bridge.

Without the project and construction management costs, the construction costs amounted to 1.2 million Swiss francs.

The bridge is a listed building.
