A crochet pig (often also a Haekel pig ) is an approx. Seven by four centimeter crocheted soft toy in the shape of a domestic pig that has developed into an Internet phenomenon .

In 2002 Michael Budde from Göttingen started an online shop that offers a supposed universal device in the form of a small, crocheted stuffed pig. The project, intended as a satire , attributed numerous possible uses to the pig, such as use as a telephone filter, dishwashing detergent, energy-saving lamp, lie detector or chemical kit. Furthermore, reference is made to the allegedly millennia-old history of the crochet pig. It is said to have been used for hunting by the Neanderthals .

All pigs were produced by Budde's grandmother Frieda (1915-2014). In 2002, her grandson gave her a crocheted pig that he had bought at a bazaar. Frieda Budde liked it, but found the execution to be in need of improvement. Since then she has dedicated herself to the production of a beautifully proportioned soft toy. The production time of a pig is about an hour. By 2013, the number of copies produced was around 15,000.

In 2008 Budde published the descriptions of the areas of application (called "Spots") as a book.

In 2009 Budde registered the user name @haekelschwein on the Internet platform Twitter and is active there as Mr. haekelschwein . Ever since he called for the pig to be carried around, photographed and sent to him, it has become an internet phenomenon. Owners photograph the art object in front of landscapes and sights around the world, post the pictures on social networks (especially Twitter) and thus report on the adventures of the crochet pig. A calendar of the best crochet pig photos has been published annually since 2010.

Mr. haekelschwein wrote in 2010 the tweet: "For the Internet should treehouse principle apply: Who is too old to get in without help, we should make no provisions in it." The result of a public vote on Twitter criticism portal twitkrit.de to Tweet of the year 2010 .

In 2011, Anke Domscheit-Berg brought the pig to talk shows like Anne Will and Günther Jauch . In the same year, the CDU politician Peter Altmaier appeared at a panel discussion on Internet politics with a crochet pig in hand. Tim pritlove demonstrated for the space-time podcast of the ESA in the context of the 18th parabolic flight of the German Center for Aerospace , a Häkelschwein in weightlessness.

Every year, in the run-up to the birthday of his grandmother (the crochet granny ) , Budde called on them to send her postcards of the places where crochet pig owners lived. Hundreds of people around the world responded to the call.

The crochet pig is now considered a model example of successful online marketing .
