In timber construction , the hanging column , also known as the hanging post , is part of the hanging structure in the roof structure . There are hanging posts in the stairwell , especially on stringer stairs (Fig. 13). The hanging column located in the center of a polygonal or round roof structure is connected to the rest of the outer roof structure by beams . Likewise, in the stairwell the slopes column combines the banisters on the beams of the staircase to the walls. The lower end of the beams carried by the hanging column often closes off a hanger .
