Héctor Gros Espiell (born September 17, 1926 in Montevideo ; † November 30, 2009 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician and legal scholar .

biography

Héctor Gros Espiell was a professor of law at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo, specializing in constitutional law and international law . He served as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and was also the chairman. He also held the position of Executive Director of the Instituto Interamericano de Derechos Humanos . He also represented Uruguay in the dispute with Argentina over the construction of a cellulose factory on the Río Uruguay before the International Court of Justice in The Hague . He was also a representative of Uruguay at the UN Human Rights Commission .

Gros Espiell, who belonged to the Partido Nacional , was Foreign Minister of Uruguay in the government of Luis Alberto Lacalle from March 1, 1990 to January 4, 1993 . Most recently he was Uruguay's ambassador to France until 2008 .

He died at the age of 83 of an incurable disease that caused him to retire from politics months earlier.
