Hélder Lopes

Hélder Lopes is an East Timorese politician. From 2015 to 2017 he was the country's deputy finance minister .

Career

Lopes began his studies at Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL) in 2000 and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. During this time he also worked in research as a team leader. He received his Masters from Michigan State University (MSU) in 2010 .

From 2006 to 2008, Lopes worked as a program development specialist and environmental officer with the Development Alternatives and Education Development Center . Before joining the Treasury Department , he was a National Economic Advisor for the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

From 2011 to 2015 Lopes served as a local economic advisor and chief economist in the Economic Policy Directorate of the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, he led the directorate as acting coordinator. A promotion to chief of staff followed. From 2013 to 2015 Lopes was the Ministry's contact for international organizations such as CPLP , ASEAN , Special Economic Zones and UN ESCAP .

On February 16, 2015 Lopes was sworn in as deputy finance minister under the new Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo as part of the government reshuffle. Lopes' term in the cabinet ended when the VII government took office on September 15, 2017.

Others

In addition to his position, Lopes teaches part-time in various subjects at UNTL, the Dili Institute of Technology (DIT) and the Institute of Business (IOB). He also writes articles on economics and rural development in national newspapers.

Lopes is a huge football fan and supporter of FC Barcelona . His passion is also reflected in his habit of repeatedly using analogies with football terms.
