The Hôtel de Saxe (also spelled "Hotel de Saxe", German: Hotel Sachsen ) was an elegant hotel near Warsaw's old town in the 19th century . It is not to be confused with the also historic Warsaw Hotel Saski (German: Saxon Hotel ). After the Second World War , the rebuilt buildings were no longer used for hotel purposes.

location

The hotel consisted of several individual buildings, most of which are located on today's Ulica Kozia ( Ziegenstrasse ) in the inner city district. The address has been Kozia 3/5 since 1919 . Before that, the street had different names, including Ulica Junkierska and Ulica Zabia . Parts of the hotel were also on the parallel Krakowskie Przedmieście ; they were connected to the buildings in the Kozia . The Kozia begins 200 meters from Warsaw Palace Square. It was the seat of various brothels in the 18th century. In the 19th century it became a popular street with elegant cafes and hotels. Intellectuals and musicians like Fryderyk Chopin frequented the “Kawa u Brzezińskiej” café at the confluence of the Kozia and Krakowskie Przedmieście . In the former palace of Count Ostrowski (also known as Wessel Palace ) on the corner of Ulica Trebacka was the main post office, the destination of constantly arriving and departing stagecoaches.

history

The Gorczyński House has been located at Kozia 3 since 1743 and belonged to the Ludwich family at the end of the 18th century. Around 1796, a few farm buildings were built leaning against the house. In 1815 the “Berdyczkowski” inn was established here, which in 1819 was owned by Andrzej Falini and from 1832 belonged to the Reszków family of singers.

In 1743, at Kozia 5, there was a stable of Captain Piotr Hiża, an army architect who probably designed this building. In 1784 the Rafałowicz family owned the property and in 1797 the Strafer house was located there. At this time, extensions were also made. In 1819 Maria Dadań was the owner of the house. In 1822 the different parts of the building were connected.

The hotel was established in 1847 under Józef Reszków - it comprised houses Kozia 3, 5, 8 and 12 as well as those in Krakowskie Przedmieście 37 and 39 . Reszków had already owned the two houses in Krakowskie Przedmieście , and he had an apartment in building no. 39. With a total of around 100 rooms, the “Hôtel de Saxe” was the largest hotel in Warsaw at the time. The renovation was probably based on a design by Józef Bobiński. General and later leader of the January uprising Romuald Traugutt lived in the hotel after his return from St. Petersburg in 1863 . He was registered here as a Galician merchant Mikołaj Czarnecki.

Even before the First World War , the hotel lost its importance in favor of the nearby and larger Hotel Europejski . It then deteriorated in the interwar period. During the fighting of the Warsaw Uprising , the hotel buildings burned down, but some of them have been preserved. In 1948 they were rebuilt for residential and office use.

The bridge connecting the two sides of the house was built around 1750. The locals call it Most Westchnień (German: Bridge of Sighs ). The two-storey part of the building lies on a wide arcade , under which there is a small memorial to the Warsaw Uprising set into the wall of the house. Since this overpass gives the street a special charm, it has often been the background of film productions. A scene from Roman Polansi's film The Pianist was shot here.

today

Today the Polski Dom Aukcyjny "Sztuka" auction house is located in parts of the former hotel building and is accessed from Krakowskie Przedmieście (No. 33). The company names the Hôtel de Saxe in its address, and there is also a corresponding name on the facade. The headquarters of Związek Nauczycielstwa Polskiego (Polish Teachers' Association) and Polski Rejestr Statków SA (Polish Ship Register AG) are located in the buildings of Kozia 3/5 .
