Romuald Traugutt (born January 16, 1826 in Szostakowo , † August 5, 1864 in Warsaw ) was a Polish general who commanded the Polish troops in the January uprising of 1863/64. From October 1863 to August 1864 he was the so-called "dictator", the leader of the Polish insurgent government and chairman of the Foreign Ministry.

Life

Romuald Traugott was born on January 16, 1826 in Szostakowo in Belarus . He came from a family of German-Polish origin. The German part of his ancestors had originally moved from Saxony to Warsaw . His grandfather came to Poland as a guard officer of the Saxon Elector and Polish King August the Strong (1670–1733).

Before the uprising, Romuald Traugutt served as a lieutenant colonel in the army of the Russian Empire . He took part in several Russian campaigns and was recognized by the tsar for his achievements in the Crimean War . After leaving the Russian army, he became the leader of the rebel troops in October 1863. After the uprising was put down, he was sentenced to death by the Russian rulers and hanged on August 5, 1864 at the age of 38 in the Warsaw Citadel . Other Polish leaders of the uprising were executed with him : Rafał Krajewski , Józef Toczyski , Roman Żuliński and Jan Jeziorański .

Afterlife and honors

Traugutts are remembered in many places in Poland, for example there is a monument dedicated to him in Ciechocinek . In Warsaw there is the Traugutt Park , in which there is also a memorial for him. There are streets named after him in Wroclaw , Gubin , Krakow , Lodz and downtown Warsaw. The museum in the 10th pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel pays tribute to Traugutt with a prison cell assigned to him.

The Catholic Church plans to beatify him because of his piety and love of his homeland . Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński supported the project.
